TW U15 & U18 weekend recap. WEHL U14 All-Stars compete in NAFP.
TW U15 entered into the NAPHL Showcase this weekend 12-2-4 and after going 5-0, left the weekend 17-2-4 on the season. TW U15 outscored the competition 39-5 to dominate the weekend. Upcoming games against the MN Blades will be a treat for both teams who are nationally ranked in the top 3. http://naphl.com/game-center/team-stats?season=69&league_code=naphl15u
TW U18 entered the weekend with an UMEL record of 7-9-2 and after a 1-1 tie with Shattuck on Sat the TW U18 squad had some bonding time when MN SW decided to enhance the physical play. While a few had to exit the game early, you could see the teamwork build and an eventual 5-2 win over the always gritty SW team. In the late game on Sunday, the only thing between MN NW being crowned the UMEL league champions, was a tenacious TW U18 team that found a way to out last the very talented NW team with a 5-4 win. That win propelled SSM into the leagues #1 spot and allowed TW U18 to finish the season in 4th with a 9-9-3 record. For anyone that has seen an UMEL game, going .500 is an awesome year. Congrats to Ian Malcolmson for leading the league in Goals, Points & Short Handed Goals. Congrats to Aaron Grounds for leading the league in Game Winning Goals. http://www.hselitehockey.com/stats#/163/leaders?season_id=447

Great article on NHL players and their Minn High School Experience. College Coaches are taking note and prioritizing Team Wisconsin games and players as part of their fall and spring recruitment, many of the TW/Wisc HS players are moving on to College and some to the NHL. I'm sure if you ask them we would hear similar experiences as our neighbors to the west.

Team Wisconsin, from an organizational perspective, needs all of our teams to align in player development. Coach Smith offers current and future U18 players a unique opportunity. The ability to teach, coach and develop players is our primary goal at Team Wisconsin. Team Wisconsin believes that Coach Smith has the ability to do those things while driving team success in a very challenging Elite League environment.” – TW Director of Coaching Brad Byce

Team Wisconsin Coaching Update 2014-2015
TW would like to congratulate Luke Strand on his new opportunity as Head Coach and General Manager of the Madison Capitols USHL franchise. TW fully appreciates everything he brought to our program. Coach Strand was instrumental in player development, which led to multiple U16s drafted in the USHL, Division 1 Scholarships and a 2014 National Championship. As players earn their opportunity within our program, coaches are no different. Success leads to opportunity. Best wishes to Coach Strand on his new opportunity.
TW will remain a great place for players to develop both on and off the ice. The 2013-14 Season defines this thought process. In the 2013-14 season we had 15 players drafted in the USHL, 7 players receive D1 commitments and 5 players make the NHL watch list. Compare those numbers to other Tier 1 programs and you will see we are doing things right and the WIAA + TW combination is working in Wisconsin.
Having Coach Strand in our program allowed many of our coaches to mentor under him this past year and understand, teach and implement the changes in the game.
Team Wisconsin returns coaches from the 2013-14, which allows for consistency for the 2014-15 season:
- U14 Head Coach Brad Byce (TW 2013-14 U16 Coach and winner of multiple Tier 1 National Titles!)
- U16 Head Coach Paul Caufield (TW 2013-14 U14 Coach and National Quarterfinalist)
- U16 Assistant Coach Craig Johnson (TW 2013-14 U16 Assistant Coach)
- U15 Head Coach Bob Schroeder (TW 2013-14 U15 Prep Development Coach)
We are interviewing numerous candidates for the U18 Head Coach and will have that position filled in the next few weeks.
Team Wisconsin provides high school hockey players an aggressive Tier 1 schedule giving them great exposure and opportunity. TW U14,U16 and U18 play a top five Tier 1 schedule in the country, as determined by MyHockeyRankings.com strength of schedule calculations. The foundation of our success is based on player development, competition and great coaching, all of which will be a foundation of our success going forward.

Team Wisconsin U16 Wins the NAHL Future Prospects Tournament
TW Registration is CLOSED for 2019-2020 except the 2006-2007 birth years...
TW 2019-2020 Tryout Q&A:
Q: When do you close TW tryout registration?
A: TW is the pinnacle of youth hockey and interest is quite high each year. If you want the opportunity, sign up early as we do typically close registration prior to tryouts based on large numbers.
What should I expect in the Initial Tryout May 17th-19th:
Q: What is the schedule?
A: One week prior to tryouts we close registration, build our master schedule and email all families registered with a report time and planned end time for the day.
Q: Why do we have to wait until the week prior to know the TW schedule?
A: We typically have very large numbers attending our tryouts and many families wait until the last minute to register. If we send you a schedule and see a major change up or down in numbers at each age group, it means change which really aggravates families so closing registration the week prior allows us to build one schedule.
Q: What should families plan for until the schedule is sent?
A: We recommend that families plan for Friday evening 4-10PM, all day Sat(8AM-9PM) and then on Sun 8AM-3PM however our goal is to have each player only attend one day so a hotel stay is not needed.
Q: What should families really expect in the May 17th-19th tryout?
A: The goal is for TW to schedule a weekend that minimizes hotel cost for parents while still allowing the TW staff to properly evaluate players. Goal of our scheduling is to have each age group only on one day for the open camp. This is primarily scrimmages. This is just an example of past years but we typically try to do 15/16’s on Saturday only, 14/18’s on Sunday only. Goalies may have a tryout the night prior or the morning before based on numbers. If we have 60 skaters, then we build 4 teams at that age group and we need 8 goalies. Any more we really won’t give the goalies a fair evaluation, so we cut down to a manageable number.
Q: What should families expect in the final camp if invited May 31st-June 2nd?
A: This is a true 3-day training camp. We have speakers and classroom with Junior and College coaches. On ice positional instruction and training. TW alumni counselors currently playing College hockey enabling players to talk with someone about their recent journey from TW to College. Yes we are picking teams but we are training and evaluating a players ability to learn and translate that to the scrimmages. Parents will be responsible for players at night and when not part of on ice or classroom with TW.
Q: Why do you run all this in Fond du Lac….For those of us from the NW, this is a long weekend.
A: We run a professional weekend tryout with a very large staff of TW coaches, counselors and guest speakers. If we segregate this into different parts of the state, we take away from the overall experience and increase cost. We ask for a little from those in the NW part of the state and hope you understand that many of the TW teams play a majority of their weekends in MN making your fall travel very light.
Q: What does a typical TW season schedule look like?
A: Best way to get an idea of a typical schedule is to look at this year's team. You will need to:
Go to www.teamwisconsin.net
Click on Schedules at the top
Click on(check box) for whatever team you want to look at 14U, 15O, 16U or 18U. Click on "View Schedules" at the bottom.
Click on "Show Past Events" near the top left of the page.
This will give you a schedule of what the that age team did this past year. Keep in mind that we have Regional Skates for any TW player to attend. TW players can attend as many as they would like based on their location. Regional practices are in Eau Claire, Stevens Point, Madison, Milwaukee, Fond du Lac & Green Bay. If it says “Regional Practice” it’s for any TW player to attend. If it actually shows a team like (14U, 15O, 16U or 18U) then that is a dedicated practice for that team only.
Q: What is the difference between a Practice and a Regional Practice?
A: As TW has grown and expanded we’ve went from just a Boys U16 & U18 to a Boys 14, 15, 16, 18 & Girls 14, 16 & 19. With this many players from across the entire state we found it very beneficial to add practices closer to the players and enhance player development. We do this by allowing any player from any TW team to attend as many Regional practices as they would like however most will attend just the one closet to them. We've added Coaches across the state to help facilitate this structure. Each year we look at the geography of players in our program and set practices appropriately. Typical season would have us running 1 and sometimes 2 practices a week in Madison, Stevens Point, Eau Claire, Green Bay, Mil & FDL. Not uncommon for each of these areas to have 8-16 hours of practice in the fall. Team practices are dedicated to a specific team and are done based on the needs and health of the team based on each Coaches judgement.
What a difference a year makes
A year ago, Chase Blackmun’s dream of playing Division I hockey was in peril. A year of hard work revived that dream. Not to mention a WIAA state title, Tier 1 State title with TW and National runner up with TW followed by a run in the NAHL with Janesville.
To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition.
